If there is any doubt your mind that the United States is still a superpower then
take a look at how closely they are following our election overseas. A recent poll
showed that 83% of the Japanese were closely following the U.S. elections. That's
also why Sen. Obama was able to draw a huge crowd in Germany.
Last month my parents visited Spain for the first time. While vacationing there
they able to catch some Spanish television while at the hotel. They thought one
show was particularly funny so when they came back home they looked it up
online. I guess I can describe it as the Spanish version of Talk Soup. In a recent
episode they were talking about the Paris Hilton response ad to John McCain. You
can view video here. Here's a screen cap of the show:
I just find it amazing how closely the world follows our elections and politics. We
have influence outside of the United States. What we do affects others. However,
I don't think we should vote the way foreigners want us to. The people who have
America's best interests at heart are, indeed, Americans.
I would also like to talk about the cultural element here that goes beyond politics.
I would like to note that when you see something on television or in a movie that
irritates or shocks you, more than likely it's not only Americans seeing it. If you
watch the video I linked to earlier the host joked about Paris Hilton. They knew
who Paris Hilton was! Yikes! We distribute our media and conversely our pop
culture worldwide. That's one of the reasons why I think it's important to care
what's on our television sets, movie screens, and radio. I'm not calling for any sort
of censorship but more of an awareness of the full of effect of media has on us and
those we distribute to.

I'm going to the place where my ancestors likely left in the 1600s
A childhood dream of mine is going to come true
next year. I've always to visit Europe and in June
2008 it will finally happen. I am taking trip with
my family to Spain!!!
I am planning to buy a digital camera soon so
I will take plenty of pictures to share with my
readers! Aren't trips good excuses for updating
your gadgets?
Since this it will be my first time in Europe and Spain
if anyone has suggestions or advice please feel free to
put in a form of a comment or email. I hope this trip
invigorates my zeal for life and seeing the world.

Hallo and Oi
It seems recently I had two foreign visitors, one
from Brazil and another from the Netherlands.
So I checked online on how to say hello in Dutch
and Portuguese. According to the internets, it is
Hallo (Dutch) and Oi (Portuguese). I just wanted
to take the time to say that foreigners are definitely
welcomed here (legally, of course). I hope you enjoy
my Tex-Mex view of the world.

My Inner Urbanite
I've lived in the Lone Star State almost all my life (I lived in
Virginia for two years). I love Texas! What is not to love?
It has nice people, fattening food, warm weather, wide open
spaces, low cost of living (in most places), all types of terrains,
and a church in almost every street corner. Living here is a
political conservative's (like me) dream.
However, I must admit since childhood I've fantasized of being
(dare I say it)..... a New York City urbanite! I guess television and
movies have made me idealize the city life. The skyscrapers,
trendy clothes, crowded streets, and ethnic diversity has always
appealed to me. Oh, and it would nice not having to drive and catch
a cab every once in a while. I'm hoping that one day I will finally stop
talking about moving to NYC and actually do it! Lately I've been even
more anxious to make the move since NYC is the mecca of the publishing
world and broadcast journalism.
I know my yearning is probably a case of 'the grass is greener on the other
side' syndrome. Although, New York City is known more for miles of
concrete than grass; I digress. I would at least like to experience
the city life even for a short time. Ironically, Los Angeles has never really
caught my attention even though it too is a media and entertainment hot
spot. Perhaps it is because I already live in a warm climate.
Exit questions: What do you like and dislike about where you live?
Is there a place you've been itching to move to?

Places I'd like to visit
Summer vacation time is upon us.
It got me thinking about the places
I want to visit. Here is my list of places:
1. All of Western and Mediterranean Europe
2. Australia
3. Morocco
4. Japan- I see pictures of Tokyo and it would
be interesting to be surrounded by so many
people with much of the technologies we have
in the U.S. (or even more advanced).
5. Costa Rica
6. Fiji
7. Nepal
8. Hawaii
9. Alaska
10. South Africa
11. Egypt
12. Cancun, Mexico - But I wouldn't go during
Spring break.
The only far away place I've been to is Israel.
There are also several places in the U.S. besides
the ones mentioned in my list that I would love to see.
So if you've been to any of the places I've listed tell
me about your experience. Or tell me what places I
should put on my list.
